Lailio has been a reliable Latvian IT partner since 2008, helping companies modernize their information systems. In this project, Lailio’s IT Maintenance and Service Department worked closely with the company Rīgas Satiksme to develop, deliver, and implement a DevOps process, as well as ensure the continuous maintenance of the Odoo platform. This system serves approximately 3,000 users on a daily basis. The developed solution is based on an open source approach, combining it with modern containerization and contemporary delivery practices.
Platform architecture
The technological foundation of the Odoo platform is built using a modern and adaptable architecture that ensures system security and precise service isolation. The infrastructure is logically divided into three distinct environments: development, testing, and production. Such an architectural division strictly guarantees that any changes to the programming code or system updates are first carefully tested under controlled conditions. Only after successful testing do they reach the production environment and the end users. This effectively eliminates unexpected disruptions in the production environment. Furthermore, the open source architecture provides significant technological independence, allowing the IT team to make in-depth modifications according to the specific business needs of Rīgas Satiksme.
DevOps process with Azure DevOps
The main engine behind the system development and delivery process is Azure DevOps, which serves as the central tool for repositories and CI/CD pipelines. The established process is fully automated: as soon as developers commit code changes to the repository, a standardized delivery and testing cycle begins immediately. First, a code review is conducted to ensure the software quality and compliance with internal standards. Following this, automated tests are executed automatically. New versions are delivered to the production environment through the same pipeline, making every release repeatable and traceable.
Kubernetes and scaling
To effectively manage computing resources and ensure consistently stable operation even under variable loads, the platform infrastructure is hosted on the Kubernetes container platform. Kubernetes automatically manages application containers and monitors their health status in real time. If any of the Odoo system containers stops responding or operates with a delay, Kubernetes restarts it automatically, requiring no manual intervention from a system administrator. Likewise, this technology enables platform scaling: for higher loads, additional Odoo containers can be added without modifying the application itself.
Authorization and access
The foundation of system and data security is centralized user authentication and strict access rights management. Considering that the platform is used daily by approximately 3,000 users with different roles, departments, and responsibility levels, the implementation of modern authorization was critically necessary. The implemented centralized system strictly guarantees that after logging in, each employee has access only to the system functionality that directly corresponds to their job responsibilities. This significantly reduces internal security risks and prevents unauthorized access to confidential business information.
Odoo performance for heavy loads
The standard Odoo software architecture tends to face serious performance challenges in situations where thousands of users are actively working in the system simultaneously. In order for this platform to flawlessly withstand large-scale customer service under intensive conditions, the Lailio team accomplished in-depth engineering work. The initial Odoo code was rewritten and significantly optimized. These significant code changes structurally organized the data processing workflows and optimized database queries, allowing the system to respond very quickly. As a result, the system is designed to operate under conditions with many concurrent users and a high density of requests.
Backups and recovery
A strict and fully automated data backup and recovery process has been established within the infrastructure. The system regularly creates backups of all databases as well as file repositories. The process also includes recovery procedures: how and in what sequence data is retrieved from a backup, so that in the event of a failure, the system can be restored in a predictable and controlled manner.
Maintenance and monitoring
Within the framework of the project, the Lailio IT Maintenance and Service Department provides continuous, daily maintenance and technical support for the platform. To make this maintenance truly proactive, comprehensive monitoring along with intelligent alerts has been integrated into the infrastructure. The monitoring platform constantly collects important metric data in real time regarding the overall performance of the Kubernetes cluster, container resources, and the Odoo application. As soon as the system detects any errors or unusual computing resource consumption, IT engineers immediately receive automated alerts. Thanks to such early detection, incident handling is highly efficient.
Benefits
The developed DevOps process and the meticulously built technical foundation significantly facilitate large-scale business management. The rewritten and optimized Odoo code, combined with the flexible scaling provided by Kubernetes, allows the platform to stably and smoothly serve approximately 3,000 daily users. The open source strategy, together with automated coding, testing, and integration processes in the Azure DevOps environment, ensures the controlled and traceable delivery of new functionalities. This results in an efficient, fast, and innovative IT solution for high-volume customer service that continuously evolves alongside the client’s needs.
